Boardwalk & Back
Field Trip!

Many
of
the Youth members of the Y and kids in the Activity Center participated
in a "Walking Field Trip." It went from the
YMCA, to the Evergreen Children's Theater, thru downtown
Bremerton, then to the Boardwalk, and
back to the Y.
Here are the comments from our Youth
Character Director, Jim Pond:
I just wanted to let all of you
know that we had our very first Activity Center Field Trip
today. This was our first attempt to have a field trip activity
out of the Youth Activity Center, and I think it was a great
success! Susanne Conger, our student intern from EWU took the
field trip on as one of her school projects. Dee Tuttle and
Susanne have been working together to get the whole thing
planned and promoted and today was the day. They worked real
hard to get parent permission slips in ahead of time, but as
usual there were a few last minute forms turned in and resulted
in the trip starting about 10 minutes later then planned.
Anyway, I was able to talk with the kids before they left on the
trip, and greeted them as they returned to the Y this afternoon.
I am very proud of Susanne, Dee and everybody involved in this
trip, as it has certainly paved the way for us to do similar
activities in the future. Plus…Susanne reported to me that she
was actually surprised by our kids and how quiet and respectful,
and well behaved they were at the Children’s Theater. Wow! A
field trip that promoted fitness, healthy eating, the arts, and
character development!
In addition to the 16 kids that
went on the trip we had two staff (Susanne & Jessica), our two
Walk to Work teens (Shatesha & Ashley), and one of our teen
leaders (Cody) all go. They left around 10:10a.m. this morning
and headed for downtown Bremerton. At the Evergreen Children’s
Theatre they were given a tour of the museum of puppets, then
played with the puppets and did a scavenger hunt. They left the
Theatre at noon and went to the Harborside fountain and ate
their healthy snack on the steps. After their snack, they walked
the Bremerton Boardwalk, and then walked back to the Y, arriving
about 1:15p.m. As each kid came back through the door I asked
them what they thought and they all responded very positively
(had a blast!), and most said they were very tired…and a few red
faces showed that the walk was a bit of a work out for them.
Again, a great success!

The Youth Sports Program
is based on participation, not competition. We believe that
everyone gets to play and that winning is not everything, but
learning to play is. YMCA Programs emphasize FUN-damentals,
skill development, character development, teamwork and
sportsmanship. Each participant will receive a game shirt and
hat as well as an end-of-year award.
Coach Pitch League: Grades 2-4
(Pictures available here.)
Note: The Coach Pitch Program is intended for
children who have one or more years of t-ball, have a basic
understanding of how to play different field positions and have
developed the basic skills of catching, throwing and being able to
regularly hit a pitched ball.
An award ceremony and
pizza picnic was held at Evergreen Park on June 13th - some
pictures from that fun day can be found here.
