Youth Fitness Training - New Training Dates!

This is a free fitness program designed for youth ages 11 - 14 that are serious about the health benefits of working out.  Each phase will educate them on how to exercise independently and safely on designated machines and the track. 

This is a 3 phase program, upon completion of each phase of training; youth will be required to pass a written or verbal exam and a practical test to demonstrate their understanding of proper use of fitness equipment. This will allow them access to the track and color coded designated equipment. Youth will receive a color coded wrist band (free of charge) that corresponds to designated equipment with each level of training. 

Youth must wear their wrist bands at all times when using the second floor equipment/track or while they are in the weight room.

The training is structured in the following manner:

Phase 1: Member Youth 11 to 14

Parents can register members ages 11-14 for this free training that teaches the key elements of fitness, and the importance of a balanced and well rounded work out. Upon completion they will be allowed access to the indoor track and color designated bikes, rowers, and stair climbers.

Each Phase 1 training session is limited to 15 youth.  All registration paperwork must be completed     24 hours in advance.  In consideration of all participants and instructor, please be sure to arrive by designated start time; late arrivals will not be permitted to attend.

Phase 2: Member Youth 13 and 14

Members ages 13 and 14, who have successfully completed phase 1, will schedule an individual appointment with Youth Fitness staff to receive further instruction. After successful completion, machines designated for phase 2 will be added to their workout.

 

Phase 3: Member Youth age 14 and older

Members ages 13 and 14, who have successfully completed phase 1 & 2 will be eligible to attend Teen Strength Training. These classes educate youth on the importance of resistance training in a safe and healthy way. After successful completion of this 10 session program youth will be certified to use the weight room independently.  Class times are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30pm to 4:45pm.     

Youth will be required to sign an agreement to follow the rules and guidelines given in trainings by the YMCA Youth Fitness staff.  If there are any infractions, parents will be contacted.  Youth will be responsible for their bands; if lost replacement bands are available for $3 at the Welcome Center. Currently, youths age 11-15 are not be allowed upstairs unless they are wearing the appropriate wrist bands.

 


Youth/Teen Activity Room Programs  (Activity Room Schedule)
The youth/teen activity room is for ages six and older.  Children under six need to be accompanied by an adult.  A wide variety of board and table games are available. Additional programs include Books ‘n Breakfast, and art classes. All activity room activities are free for members.  Activity room hours during the summer are as follows:

Mon. Thru Fri.:        10:30 pm - 8:00 pm   (As of June 16th)

Saturday:                10:00 am - 7:30 pm

Sunday:                  12:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Study Time (during school year)

Study Time is available on Monday through Thursday at 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. This is a quiet time in the Center and there will be YMCA Staff to help kids out with their homework.

Books ‘n Breakfast
Every Saturday morning, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., youth and teens, ages 6-16 can eat breakfast while they read. Kids should bring their own reading material.  

Art Class
Be creative! Every Monday at 5:30-6:15 pm and Wednesday from 2- 3 pm, youth and teens may make a project that they can take home.

Butokukan Karate (Ages: 7 through adult)
Butokukan Karate comes from some of the fluid movements of the (conventional) Chinese styles, softening the traditional hard style from Okinawa. With stretching and warm-up exercises, you will learn self-defense as well as Kata (form). Participants will also focus on the Karate emphasis of breath control, correct posture and balance. Class meets 6 until 7:30 p.m., on Monday and Wednesday

Cheerleading (Ages 7 to 13) 
Class meets on Wednesday, with Beginners at 4:00 to 4:45 p.m., and Advanced from 4:45 until 5:00 p.m.
Participants in the class will benefit from team spirit, hard work, accomplishments, building self esteem building, physical conditioning and loads of fun. If your child can get loud and likes to dance this class is perfect. Learn basic tumbling, stunts and cheers. There will also be basic dance routines taught.

Fit Kids - NEW TIME!
Fit Kids is a 45-minute fitness class with a wide variety of structured games and exercise workouts and is held from 4:15-5 p.m. in the gym on Monday through Thursday.  Join us for circuit training, aerobics, stretching, capture the flag,
kick-ball and more.

Goju-Ryu Karate Class (Ages 6 through Adult)
In this class, participants will learn a wide variety of traditional Japanese exercises of karate and physical fitness. Karate emphasizes balance, breath control, correct posture, plus visual and mental concentration. With stretching and warm-up exercises, participants will learn Kata (form) postures, Kata Bunkae (which describes the actual application of the technique practiced in the Kata), Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) and Jiyu-Kumite (free sparing). For more information, please call Chieko Huse at 360-692-9035. Class times are Tuesday and Thursday; Beginners 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Novice 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Intermediate 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Hapkido -
This martial arts class is led by Lonnie Abad, 3rd Degree Black Belt, and Frank Cruz, 1st Degree Black Belt.  This Korean martial arts class teaches self-defense, using kicking, throwing and joint-lock moves. Hapkido is open to ages 8 to adult and is offered Tuesdays at 6:45-8:15 pm.

Splash and Jam     
From 6-9 p.m., every third Saturday of the month, the YMCA holds a “Splash & Jam.” Three hours of great activities, swimming, basketball, volleyball, organized games, crafts, food, and more. Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult.   There is no cost for members and non-members only pay $5 per person.

Youth Sports
The Bremerton Family YMCA Youth Sports programs service over 1,000 kids a year in Kitsap County. The Youth Sports program is based on participation and not competition. Our programs encourage fun, skill development, fitness, teamwork, fair play, character development and family involvement. Our Youth Sports department offers a wide variety of fun-filled sport activities and leagues for kids of all ages.  Youth Sports include basketball, T-ball, soccer, volleyball, and much more.   Check with the YMCA staff at the Welcome Center for current Youth Sports information.  

Spring (April - June) 
The nine-week sessions of Tee-ball and Coach-pitch baseball are an excellent opportunity for family involvement in programs that provides children, grades K-2 (Co-ed), the ability to learn baseball skills and build team spirit. All of our Tee-ball and Coach-pitch baseball programs are coached by parent volunteers. No coaching experience is needed as the YMCA provides assistance and training for parent volunteers.  Children will receive their team hat, shirt and an award at the end of the season. 

Summer (August - September) 
This four-week program is an excellent opportunity for children to learn soccer fundamentals and the rules of the game, while having fun playing against each other in a safe, non-competitive environment.  Sessions are as follows: Grades 1-3 (Co-ed), Grades 4-6 (Co-ed). Children receive a team shirt and an award at the end of the season.   

Fall (September - November)   Registration now open!
This seven-week program teaches children soccer fundamentals or how improve his or her current level of play in a non-competitive environment.  Players will learn and develop skills through maximum ball contact, positive instruction and small-sided games. Sessions are as follows: Grades 1-4 (Girls) and Grades 1-4 (Boys)  

Winter (January - March
Players will learn and develop basketball skills with the focus on dribbling, passing, shooting and having fun in a positive environment during this six-week session.  YMCA staff does the coaching. However, parents are both needed and welcome to help out.  Each child receives a team shirt and an end of the season award.  Sessions are as follows: Grades 1-4 (Girls) and Grades1-4 (Boys).      


2010 Youth Indoor Soccer Instructional Program:

Season is September 29th to November 15th,
                     Register beginning Aug 25th!

 

A great Fall Program for beginners and experienced players alike. Your child will learn new soccer skills or improve his/her current level in this fast-paced Instructional Program. Great YMCA staff and volunteer help will make this a positive sports experience for your child. An excellent introduction to team sports.

   Grades 1 - 4 Boys:   Limited to first 15 players who sign up

The Bremerton Family YMCA offers 30-minute swimming lessons for members and non-members,  which normally runs for six weeks with a two-week break between sessions. Check at the Y  Welcome Center for details. The classes are held Saturday mornings at the City of Bremerton Jarstad Aquatic Center, which is adjacent to the YMCA. We teach ages 6 to adult and the cost to members is $10, non-members are $25.

Youth & Toddler Classes are offered to our YMCA family members for no additional fee.  Toddler Classes include Tumble Bears, Tiny Tots, and Music and Movement. Youth classes include Butokukan Karate, and Goju-Ryu Karate among others.  

However, classes without a minimum of 5 participants regularly attending may be cancelled. 

Drop In Preschool Program:

This Program started out as a Military only Drop-In Preschool, but we are now happy to also offer it to our Bremerton Family YMCA Members.

Youth and Teen Policy:
Youth at the YMCA are expected to be involved in an organized activity or working out. It is not recommended that youth be left here by themselves for over three hours. The Activity Room is not intended to be an all day babysitting option. Children under six years of age need to have adult supervision while in the facility. Youth, ages 6 and up must use same sex locker rooms. 

The gym floor is open to youth and teens, ages 6-18.  Children under six must be accompanied by a parent.  The basketball floor is reserved from noon-1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday for adult noon basketball (Ages 17 and older). Adult Non-Members do not have gym/ basketball privileges, but Youth non-members do..

2010 Youth T-Ball and Coach Pitch Program:

  Season:  April 12th - June 9th         Registration closed

The Teeball and Coach Pitch Program is based on participation not competition. We believe that everyone gets to play and that winning is not everything, learning how to play is. This program will emphasize Fun-damentals, skill development, character development, teamwork and sportsmanship. We want youngsters going away feeling good about themselves.

This is an excellent opportunity for full family involvement. Team coaches and helpers are all parent volunteers. No experience is needed and the YMCA will provide training and support.

Elementary Teeball League:     Grades K-2     

Limited to first 44 players who sign up

Coach Pitch League:     Grades 2-4

Coach Pitch Program is intended for children who have one or more years of Teeball experience, have a basic understanding of how to play different field positions, and have developed the skills of catching, throwing and being able to regularly hit a pitched ball.

In this exciting Program, everyone is a winner. Your child will learn new basketball skills and fundamentals in this fast-paced 12 session  Instructional Program. Great YMCA staff and volunteer help will make this a positive sports experience for your child. An excellent introduction to team sports and basic basketball skill development.
 

Players will learn the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, and have fun scrimmaging against each other in a safe and non-competitive environment. Skill games/scrimmages will be played, however, there will be no competition against other teams.


 

Program: 12 Practice Sessions - January 6th to February 22nd

   Practices held on Mondays and Wednesdays at Cottonwood Elementary

   Boys:  5:15 - 6:15 pm    Girls: 6:30 - 7:30 pm
