Youth Fitness Training - New Program!

Previously, youth in the age range from 11-15 were not allowed in the weight room or upstairs for use of the cardio equipment. Starting in mid-April, a new Youth Fitness Training Program has been started to train and "certify" youth to use the weight room and cardio equipment.

The training will emphasize the health benefits of working out and train them on selected machines, and the track, so they can work out independently. After attending the training, and passing a series of written and practical tests, they will be given color-coded wristbands for each training level completed. There will also be an incentive program, with prizes to be awarded for achieving various levels of use and proficiency.

This is designed for the Member Youth to learn the fundamentals of fitness training and proper use of the machines, so they will reduce the risk of injury, and choose exercise as a life-long habit for optimal health.

The training is structured in the following manner:

Phase 1: Member Youth 11 and older

Attend a 60 minute training covering key elements of fitness; importance of a balanced , well-rounded workout; focus on aerobic exercise; and achieving optimal cardio health. Upon completion, each youth will sign an agreement to follow the rules and guidelines provided by the Y fitness staff. with the appropriate band, the graduates will be allowed the use of the indoor track; designated bikes, rowers and stair climbers.

Phase 2: Member Youth 13 and older

Those who have completed Phase 1 will need to schedule an individual appointment with fitness staff to receive further instruction on elliptical machines; treadmills; and arc trainers. After completion, they will be given the color band signifying use of the additional machines.

Phase 3: Member Youth age 14 and older

If you have completed Phases 1 & 2, you will be eligible for Teen Strength Training, a 10 session training program on the use of resistance training equipment in a safe and healthy manner. It will concentrate on lifting technique, stretching, basic anatomy, and nutrition, while continuing the emphasis on aerobic activity. Teen Strength Training graduates will be certified to use the Weight Room.

After June 30, youths age 11-15 will not be allowed upstairs unless they are wearing the appropriate wrist bands.
